Jurors on Tuesday found former suburban Chicago police officer Drew Peterson guilty of trying to hire someone to kill the prosecutor who helped to convict him in the killing of his third wife.

Peterson was convicted of trying to hire a fellow inmate’s uncle while in prison to kill Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow, who helped convict Peterson in 2012 of killing ex-wife Kathleen Savio eight years earlier. Prosecutors say Peterson believed that with Glasgow dead, he could win an appeal of his conviction

The jury deliberated for about an hour before finding Peterson guilty of solicitation of murder for hire and solicitation of murder. Peterson, 62, is serving a 38-year sentence in Savio’s death and faces up to 60 more years in prison.

During closing arguments Tuesday, prosecutors said prison recordings of Peterson speaking with a fellow inmate prove he wanted Glasgow killed.

“It’s the defendant’s own words that prove him guilty beyond reasonable doubt,” said Steve Nate of the Illinois attorney general’s office, which assisted Randolph County prosecutors with the case.

Peterson’s fellow inmate, Antonio “Beast” Smith, wore a wiretap for prosecutors, and jurors heard hours of Smith’s recorded conversations with Peterson at Menard Correctional Center in November 2014. Smith testified last week that Peterson enlisted him to help kill Glasgow.

Nate pointed to a specific section of secret recordings in which Smith tells Peterson that he gave his uncle the go-ahead to kill Glasgow.

“OK, all right, I’m in,” Peterson, a former Bolingbrook police sergeant, responded. “From the first time we talked about it, there was no turning back.”

This year, researchers surveyed residents of 15 states in India and asked them what it is like to live in conditions of contemporary slaverythe term used to describe human trafficking, forced labor, sexual exploitation, and other forms of illegal enslavement in the 21st century.

I was physically and sexually assaulted when I was working in the field. I had also threat on my life and on my family, said one unnamed person who was in bonded labor, a type of exploitation in which people are forced to work to repay debt, real or assumed. Another person, who was made a street beggar, said: Though I am begging I am not paid a single amount. I have to deposit all to them. I am deprived of food and good sleep.

These individuals are two of an estimated 18.4 million Indians who live in contemporary slavery, according to a new report from the Walk Free Foundation, an Australia-based organization. The groups Global Slavery Index, released Tuesday, estimates a total of 45.8 million people are in some form of contemporary slavery in 167 countries. Nearly 60 percent of those live in just five nations: India, the country with the highest number of slaves, followed by China (3.4 million), Pakistan (2.1 million), Bangladesh (1.5 million), and Uzbekistan (1.2 million).

Slavery is illegal in every country; Mauritania became the last to outlaw it, abolishing the practice in 1981 but only criminalizing it in 2007. But it still exists in every country, and is common in some poor countries with oppressive governments or few human-rights protections.

North Korea has the most people enslaved in proportion to population, with 4.4 percent of the countrys population living in conditions of slavery. That equals about 1.1 million people out of 25 million. Uzbekistan is next with 4 percent of its population, followed by Cambodia (1.6 percent), India, (1.4 percent), and Qatar (1.4 percent).

People who are forced into labor most often work in the agriculture, food production, fishing, manufacturing, and construction industries. Migrant workers and indigenous people are among the most vulnerable. Women and girls are forced into sex work and marriages in nearly every country.

There are as many as 20,000 North Korean workers in Russia who are required to hand over nearly all of their wages to the North Korean government. Victims of trafficking in Europe often come from Eastern European countries, forced to work abroad in dangerous conditions for little pay. In Syria, Iraq, Yemen, and the Palestinian territories, children have been forced into armed conflicts, coerced into become informants and suicide bombers.

Police are investigating possible criminal charges over an incident at a Cincinnati zoo in which a gorilla was killed in order to rescue a four-year-old boy who had fallen into its enclosure.

An animal rights activist group said it had filed a federal negligence complaint with the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) against the zoo, seeking the maximum penalty of $US10,000 ($13,837) followingSaturday’s killing of the 204-kilogram ape named Harambe.

“The failure of the Cincinnati Zoo to adequately construct this enclosure to protect both the public and the animal held prisoner there is a clear and fatal violation of the Animal Welfare Act,” Stop Animal Exploitation Now said in its complaint letter to the USDA.

Mounting outrage over the shooting death of the western lowland silverback, which is an endangered species, sparked more than 460,000 signatures on online petitions at Change.org, some demanding “Justice for Harambe” and urging police to hold the child’s parents accountable.

Zoo officials were not immediately available for comment on either the negligence complaint or the police investigation but said on Monday the exhibit was safe and exceeded required protocols.

Authorities are taking a second look at the possibility of criminal charges in the incident after police initially said no-one was charged.

“The incident at the Cincinnati Zoo involving the young child who fell into the gorilla enclosure is under investigation by the Cincinnati Police Department,” Hamilton County Prosecutor Joseph Deters said.

“Once their investigation is concluded, they will confer with our office on possible criminal charges.”

Witnesses said the child had expressed a desire to get into the enclosure and he climbed over a 1-metre barrier, falling 4.5 metres into a moat.

The shooting of Harambe has attracted outrage among animal rights supporters.

I find it very hard to decide what the Cincinnati Zoo should have done in the case of the human toddler and Harambe, the silverback male gorilla. Seeing more of the videos, I got the impression that Harambe was mostly protective. He showed a combination of protection and confusion. He stood over the child, held him up, moved/dragged him through the water (at least once very roughly), stood over him again. Much of his reaction may have been triggered by public noise and yelling.

There was no moment of acute aggression, as also admitted by the zoo director. If the gorilla had wanted to kill the child, one bang of his fist would have done it. People have no idea of their superhuman strength. Yet, he didnt perform any killing move. I should also clarify, since people on Facebook have said that gorillas are dangerous predators, that this is entirely wrong. A gorilla doesnt look at a human child as something edible.

The species is not interested in catching moving objects, the way cats are. Lions or tigers are predators, but gorillas are peaceful vegetarians. They prefer a juicy fruit over a piece of meat any time of the day. The one thing that reliably makes a gorilla male mad is another male who enters his territory or gets too close to his females and young. Haramba surely knew that he was not dealing with competition, hence had no reason to attack. There are several previous cases of toddlers falling into gorilla enclosures, one at the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago and another at Jersey Zoo (UK). In both cases, the children survived the attention of the apes, in one case even receiving assistance from them.

At Rotterdam Zoo, a gorilla jumped the moat to get close to a woman who often visited and also here the incident ended without a gorilla death. So, why was Harambe shot? First of all, the zoo director did not have the benefit of the video by now seen by everyone on the internet. A decision like this needs to be taken in a matter of minutes: there is no time to hear different opinions or look at video evidence. Second, all alternatives had big IFs attached to them. Caretakers could have distracted Harambe and get him to move away from the child (which I understood was tried to no avail).

They could have tried to lure him away with food or even have asked him to exchange the child for food (a process that apes understand very well). Another option might have been to tranquilize Harambe. But a tranquilizer dart sometimes upsets the target, which would have produced exactly the wrong reaction. None of these options offered a solid solution, one the director could count on.

Yet again, captivity has taken an animal’s life. The latest victim: a 17-year-old gorilla named Harambe, who was gunned down after a young boy managed to crawl through a fence before falling into his enclosure at the Cincinnati Zoo.

The incident (which could have been prevented by surrounding the enclosure with a secondary barrier) has generated a great deal of debate online, some extreme one tweet said, “[I]f you have to shoot aim for the least endangered one,” while an Express columnist took the view that “zoo staff did what you might think all people would want: they put the human life first”. But arguing over whose life is more valuable misses the point. What we should be asking is why intelligent, self-aware animals are still being displayed as living exhibits for humans to gawk at.

Harambe and other animals serving life sentences in zoos are leading lives of quiet desperation. They are denied the most basic freedoms, including being able to choose where to roam, when and what to eat, and whom to socialise with. It’s no wonder that these magnificent animals frequently exhibit signs of extreme depression and related psychological conditions, such as pacing, rocking and eating their own vomit, which is unheard of in their wild counterparts, as they struggle with the confines of their captivity. They’re also prone to cardiac disease: in 2011, the Smithsonian Institution revealed that 30 of its gorillas were on heart medication.

When, in 2007, the Zoological Society of London spent 5.3m on a new gorilla enclosure, Ian Redmond, the chief consultant to the UN Great Apes Survival Partnership, said: “5m for three gorillas [seems a huge amount] when national parks are seeing [three gorillas] killed every day for want of some Land Rovers, trained men and anti-poaching patrols. It must be very frustrating for the warden of a national park to see”. Clearly, the same amount of money a zoo spends on buying expensive animals could benefit so many more of the same animals living in the wild. Our need for entertainment is expensive, unnecessary and without discernible benefit, then, to the animals involved.

One of the zookeepers who raised the gorilla shot dead at the Cincinnati Zoo on Saturday said the loss of the animal was “no different than losing a family member that was very close to you.”

Jerry Stones, the facilities director for the Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville, Texas, the birthplace of Harambe, told ABC affiliate KRGV-TV in Rio Grande Valley, Texas that he was there for Harambe’s birth and raised him like a child.

“We hand-raised him. I took him home at night with me,” Stones said. “You know, you get up at midnight and change the diaper, just like you would a human baby. When I took this baby home, I was totally responsible. You become ‘Mom,’ they look at you just like a human baby.”

Stones described the 400-pound endangered animal as “very intelligent” and “very inquisitive.”

“I raised I don’t know how many baby gorillas, but he was memorable because he was so intelligent. He showed a positive attitude as far as leadership. He nurtured his siblings, he would carry them around. That was one of the reasons I pushed for him to go to Cincinnati, so that he could have a family.”

Despite outrage from the public, some experts and activists believe the Cincinnati Zoo was right to fatally shoot an endangered gorilla after a toddler fell into the animal’s enclosure.

All accredited zoos, such as Cincinnati’s, have protocols in place for when an animal threatens staff or visitors. In this case, the zoo had to decide whether to tranquilize 17-year-old Harambe, a 450-pound western lowland gorilla, or to use greater force, said Ed Hansen, CEO of the American Association of Zoo Keepers.

A lethal shot comes with the risk of accidentally shooting the person you’re trying to save, but a tranquilizer dart could have taken up to 30 minutes to work and comes with other risks, Hansen said.

The Dangerous Animal Response Team first tried to coax Harambe out of the exhibit, according to zoo director Thane Maynard, but the team was only able to cajole the female gorillas away from the three-year-old, who slipped through the railing and plummeted more than 10 feet into the exhibit’s moat.

As Harambe alternated between gently pawing the boy and dragging him, the team resorted to killing him. Maynard said Monday that the Cincinnati Zoo received an outpouring of support for the decision from colleagues around the world including famed primatologist Jane Goodall.

“We stand by our decision,” he said. “We’d make the same decision today.”

Still, some critics felt the zoo should have done more before killing Harambe, one of fewer than 175,000 western lowland gorillas worldwide.

And many urged authorities to hold the boy’s parents criminally responsible: An online petition called “Justice for Harambe” had more than 330,000 signatures Tuesday.

Harambe, a western lowland gorilla, turned 17 at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden on Friday. The zoo celebrated his birthday. The next day, zoo officials shot and killed the critically endangered ape.

The reason? Harambe acted like a gorilla.

On the day Harambe died, a 4-year-old boy managed to get into his enclosure. Video of the incident shows that Harambe grabbed the child, stood over him at times, and dragged him. The severity of Harambe’s actions and the perceived reasoning behind them depend on whom you ask. And after evaluating the situation, zoo officials decided to kill Harambe instead of tranquilizing him.

It took around 10 minutes from the moment the boy fell into Harambe’s enclosure to the decision to kill Harambe. But the controversy surrounding Harambe’s death has just begun.

Some people believe Harambe was protecting the child in the same way a gorilla would protect its own offspring. However, according to the incident report cited by the New York Times, Harambe was described as “violently dragging and throwing the child.”

Once zoo officials were notified of the incident about 10 minutes after the boy fell in they decided the child was in danger. They later explained it was clear a tranquilizer was not an option because of the risk that tranquilizing Harambe would make him react dangerously.

The real issue of Harambe’s death is about the idea of responsibility and accountability, or rather the lack of both when it comes to Michelle Gregg, the mother of the child who slipped into Harambe’s enclosure. The basic question: How could any mother let her 4-year-old child fall into an enclosure?

According to the Cincinnati Zoo’s annual report, 1.5 million visitors visited the park in 2014 to 2015, and the park has accommodated around or more than 1 million visitors over the past six years. Included in those numbers are millions of parents who managed to keep an eye on their children and not let them fall into a gorilla pit.

According to WLWT-TV, this was the first breach at the zoo since its opening in 1978.

There’s also the question of exactly how long Gregg’s child was unsupervised. When zoos make exhibits, they employ experts and architects who create barriers to make sure it’s difficult for people to get in and for the animals to get out. The Cincinnati Zoo had a barrier, bushes, a 15-foot drop (there’s a wall so the gorillas can’t climb out), and a shallow moat enclosing the gorilla exhibit.

Unless Gregg’s child was gifted and coordinated, these barriers would make it very difficult, if not delay a child immensely, to get into the enclosure.

It just seems a little puzzling to not be able to keep an eye on your child especially in a place where killing beasts gorillas, lions, wild African dogs, and wolves roam. And the missing child must have been missing for some time to get through the barriers on his own.

There’s also the matter of Gregg’s perceived lack of accountability.

In a now-deleted Facebook post, Gregg said she was a good parent and that this was an accident and cited God as the reason her child wasn’t harmed:

It’s not like Gregg lost track of her son and he bumped his head on a kitchen table or burned himself on a hot pan. Because of Gregg’s lack of supervision, an endangered animal was killed and her son’s life was put in danger.

Gregg’s perceived lack of remorse (she didn’t mention Harambe’s death) in this Facebook post has garnered an outpouring of online hate. There are now online petitions (this one has 47,000-plus signatures; another has 317,000-plus signatures) asking for Child Protective Services to investigate Gregg for neglect. There’s so much vitriol out there against Gregg that another Michelle Gregg has been harassed by people online. There are also unfounded rumors that Gregg is planning to sue to zoo, which would only build the hate against her.

Harambe’s death isn’t unlike that of Cecil the lion, a beloved big cat that was killed by an American dentist last year, or Marius, a giraffe at a Copenhagen zoo that zoo officials killed to feed lions in 2014. Harambe, Cecil, and Marius were all majestic animals that died because of human intervention. And the internet and social media, I fully believe, have raised our empathy and awareness of animals by exposing us to more animals in general

In the wake of Harambe’s death, there’s been a huge swell of social media backlash against Gregg and against the zoo not unlike the backlash against the dentist who killed Cecil and the Copenhagen Zoo, which euthanized Marius. Disputes over human responsibility are being raised, as are debates about gorillas living in captivity and questions about the ethics of having zoos in the first place.

Gregg made a huge mistake she might be the only member in the “parent who let their child play with a gorilla club” by not watching her son closely enough. She’s admitted as much. But the internet and social media have a way of crystallizing this story and turning Gregg into a lightning rod for hate.

Taking a horrific situation and making it worse is something people on the internet excel at, and this Memorial Day weekend has been no exception. On Saturday, in front of a horrified crowd, zoo officials shot and killed a beloved 17-year-old gorilla named Harambe, after a 4-year-old boy climbed under a fence and fell almost 20 feet into the habitat where the giant apes live.

The boy was unharmed from both the fall and the gorilla, who dragged him through a foot of water at one point. There was no indication that the gorilla wanted to harm the child, but knowing the strength of the animal zoo officials decided the boy was in critical danger. Worried that tranquilizers would take too long to be effective, they made the decision to shoot and kill the gorilla.

Animal lovers and activists from all over the world have reacted with outrage. A change.org petition calling for charges of criminal negligence against the parents has obtained more than 340,000 signatures. The zoo has said it has no plans to charge anyone.

There is more than enough blame to go around in this situation, which is clearly tragic for the gorillas, who live in captivity and are endangered in the wild. The fact that it was killed is sad, but, in the eyes of the zoo, it was unavoidable in the moment. The zoo’s director, Thane Maynard, said in a press conference, “Were talking about an animal that Ive seen crush a coconut with one hand.”

Though some have jumped to blame the zoo for shooting Harambe, most blame has focused on the mother of the child, who has not been officially identified. After internet commenters on Facebook, Twitter, and thousands of news sites jumped to criticize and charge her with negligence

A “Justice for Harambe” page, which has more than 100,000 “likes” flaunts a cornucopia of horrific commentary. “Cincinnati has more than enough spoiled 4 year olds with parents who don’t watch over their children! We only had 1 Harambe! The gorilla was worth more than the stupid kid!” writes Bonnie Evers of Cincinnati; “They are trying to cover up that the child’s life was never in danger from the gorilla,” wrote Dave Mcnemar, of Maryland, inexplicably. “Zoos aren’t your babysitters,” is a fairly common sentiment floating around. The Daily Mail reported that the child’s father has a “lengthy criminal history,” as if that were germane to any of this.

Activists are banding together in support of Harambe by creating a petition to pass ‘Harambe’s Law.’

The petition states the law would give legal consequences when an endangered animal is harmed or killed due to the negligence of visitors.

As of Tuesday morning, the petition has more than 106,000 supporters. Once it reaches enough signatures, its author – a woman from Chicago – said she plans to send it to lawmakers.

Another petition, by a woman in Cincinnati, blames the boy’s parents for neglect and calls for them to be investigated. That one has more than 300,000 supporters.

After a 25-year-old veteran was identified by ABC station KTRK-TV as the alleged gunman behind a deadly shooting in west Houston, the young man’s devastated stepmother told ABC News, “I think he was haunted by everything he experienced” in Afghanistan.

Police have not confirmed the identity of the shooter, who also died in the shooting, but KTRK-TV in Houston reported that a source identified the suspect as veteran Dionisio Garza III.

The Army confirmed to ABC News that Garza was deployed to Afghanistan twice between 2009 and 2013 and that he was discharged in 2014.

Garza’s stepmother, Cathy Garza, told ABC News she thinks he might have had post-traumatic stress disorder.

“I think he was haunted by everything he experienced there. I think it changes you,” she said. “I don’t know how you can go through what he went through and see what he saw and not have it change you or affect you.”

WASHINGTON (AP) A federal judge is ordering the release of Trump University internal documents in a class-action lawsuit against the now-defunct real estate school owned by presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.

The order by U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel in San Diego, which came Friday in response to a request by The Washington Post, calls for the documents to be released by Thursday. The Post reported the order in a story on its website Saturday.

Trump University has been cited in anti-Trump political ads during the primary campaign as evidence that Trump doesn’t fulfill his promises. Trump’s lawyers deny any wrongdoing in the case before Curiel as well as another class-action suit in San Diego and a $40 million lawsuit filed in 2013 by the state of New York alleging that more than 5,000 people had been defrauded.

Donald Trump looked like a fool and a fraud on Sunday. But what else is new?

Even the most ardent Trumpistas would have to admit that Trumps appearance at the annual Rolling Thunder motorcycle rally was, as spectacles go, pretty pathetic. It was supposed to be a vast, multitudinous gathering on the plaza in front of the Lincoln Memorial, one of the greatest and most historic public spaces in the nation. Instead, Trump drew a paltry crowd estimated by organizers at perhaps 5,000.

As Trump showed the world, it is relatively easy to run for president if you are willing to say or do anything to get attention and you believe in nothing except your own self-inflated myth. His reality-television-style campaign overwhelmed a badly fractured Republican Party. But the act is getting harder to pull off because now his words, often chosen for their shock value, have real consequences.

Take his promise, made Thursday in a speech on energy policy, to cancel the Paris agreement on climate change and stop U.S. payments into a United Nations fund to mitigate the impact of global warming worldwide. Thats in keeping with Trumps know-nothing approach to the climate issue, but it can hurt him more than he might imagine.

Trump apparently believes that he can defeat his likely opponent, Hillary Clinton, by winning the votes of some disaffected Democrats who support Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.). Yet while Trump has called climate change a hoax somehow perpetrated by the dastardly Chinese, Sanders calls it the single greatest threat facing our planet and proposes urgent and sweeping action to limit atmospheric and oceanic warming. Clinton basically agrees with Sanders, as evidenced by her unfortunately phrased promise to put a lot of coal companies and coal miners out of business.

Just like that, Sanders supporters for whom climate change is a paramount issue are out of Trumps reach. It is hard to imagine how they could vote for a man who would renounce the landmark Paris deal, no matter what they think of Clinton.

Trump also spent the week fighting with New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez, who happens to chair the Republican Governors Association and is considered one of the partys brightest rising stars. Speaking in Albuquerque, he blamed Martinez for what he called the states lackluster economic performance. Its your governors fault, he said. Shes not doing the job.

The effort called Save KPLU lived up to its name Thursday afternoon, when KPLU General Manager Joey Cohn took to the stations airwaves to make the official announcement.

We reached our goal of $7 million, Cohn announced shortly after 3:30 p.m. in the studio packed with staff, supporters and media.

Now the Friends of 88.5 FM can make an offer to station owner Pacific Lutheran University to keep it out of the hands of the University of Washingtons KUOW.

It took 17,000 supporters of the Tacoma-based public radio station less than five months to donate the money. A fund-topping $500,000 matching contribution came from a collection of businesses and individuals.

In a typical fundraising effort, charities will first seek big donors before a public campaign. Save KPLU didnt have that option.

We didnt have the luxury of time. We just had to go, Cohn said.

Money was raised at over 85 community events. Cohn said he knows of no other situation in public radio that comes close to the fundraising efforts of Save KPLU.

Weve been saying we made public radio history, Cohn said. He cited $2 million dollars raised in less than a month for a station in Greeley, Colorado, as being the closest, and $1 million of that was a single donation. This kind of donations in this short of time, no, its never happened before, Cohn said.

Weve had 4-year-olds send in change, he said.

KPLU, which broadcasts news and public radio programing along with jazz and blues, has a large presence in Western Washington. In addition to 88.5 FM, it broadcasts on 10 repeaters from Bellingham to Raymond.

CHICAGO, Illinois A long weekend of violence resulted in more than 60 shooting victims and at least five fatalities, including a 15-year-old girl who was riding in a car with a known gang member, reports say.

According to the Chicago Tribune, the deaths during the Memorial Day weekend mean at least 60 people died from gunfire during the month of May in the nation’s third-largest city, with a population of approximately 2.7 million.

Police increased patrols in those areas on Monday.

“As we’ve said before, it’s about 1,500 people that are driving the violence,” First Deputy Superintendent John Escalante tells NBC news. “Those are the people we’re trying to concentrate on.”

USA Today reports that in the first three months of 2016 there has been a 72 percent increase in murders and an 88 percent increase in shootings in Chicago. Gang violence is being blamed for the increase.

Edinburgh: When Scotland voted in an independence referendum in September 2014, nationalist leaders pitched it as a once-in-a-generation chance to break a three-century-old bond.

But less than two years after Scots opted to remain in the United Kingdom, the spectre of secession again looms over the lush green expanse of the British isles. The trigger this time is another referendum with existential impact: next month’s vote on whether to leave the European Union.

If Britain chooses to ditch the EU despite a vote to stay from the Euro-friendly Scots, nationalist leaders here say they will revive the push for an independent nation in order to keep Scotland inside Europe. And they think that the second time around, they would win.

Support for Britain to stay in the European Union stood at 51 per cent, 5 points ahead of support for a withdrawal from the 28-member bloc, according to an ORB poll published in the British Daily Telegraph on Monday, but down from a 13-point lead a week ago. Support to leave the union grew by 4 points to 46 per cent. Britons will vote on June 23 on whether to remain in the 28-member bloc.

“Pulling Scotland out of the European Union against our will would be a change in material circumstances,” said Alex Salmond, who led the campaign for independence in 2014 and now represents Scotland in the British Parliament.

In that scenario, he said, there will be “a referendum on Scottish independence within the next two years. And this time, the result would be ‘yes’. ”

The potential for a British breakup as fallout from the June 23 referendum underscores just how much is at stake when the country decides whether to become the first nation to withdraw from the 28-member EU.

It was supposed to be a form of punishment, a particularly harsh and memorable kind.

But by the time Yamato Tanooka’s parents came looking for him after intentionally abandoning the 7-year-old in the woods in northern Japan for several minutes, the boy was missing.

Takayuki Tanooka, the boy’s 44-year-old father, eventually admitted that the family’s story was fabricated and that the boy had actually been left behind as punishment for throwing rocks at cars along a road in the area, the Times reported. He told a local reporter that he could not initially admit to authorities what he had done, according to the paper.

“I was not able to ask for [a search] with a reason of punishment,” he told TV Asahi, according to CNN. “I thought it might be taken as a domestic violence.”

“I feel very sorry for my child,” the father told an NTV reporter. “I am so sorry for causing trouble for many people.”

The area where the child was last seen is home to wild bears, according to the Times.

Police are still deciding whether the parents will face charges related to child abandonment, but many critics are calling for the parents to face repercussions, according to the Times.

About 130 rescuers and police officers searched for a third day in mountains in Nanae, Hokkaido, after Yamato Tano-oka went missing Saturday, a police spokesman said.

His parents originally told the police that he got lost while the family was walking in the area to pick wild vegetables.

The boys 44-year-old father, Takayuki Tano-oka, eventually told the police they left the boy in the mountains on the way home from a park after scolding him for throwing stones at cars on a nearby road.

The parents left the boy in the mountains as punishment, the police spokesman said. They said they went back to the site immediately, but the boy was no longer there.

Republicans Stunned After Trump Reveals

When Donald Trump told Republicans that his campaign had money, it was a lie. In meeting with Senate Republicans, Trump’s campaign privately admitted that they have no money and will not be able to run television ads until after the GOP convention in July.

Donald Trumps campaign has alerted Senate Republicans that he wont have much money to spend fending off attacks from Hillary Clinton over the next couple months.

The notice came when Paul Manafort, Trumps senior advisor, met with a group of Senate Republican chiefs of staff for lunch last week, sources familiar with the meeting told the Washington Examiner. The admission suggests that Trump will be far more dependent on the GOP brass for money than he has led voters to believe, but its consistent with his reliance on the Republican National Committee to provide a ground game in battleground states.

Trump is also refusing to use his own money to fund his campaign. In other words, what Donald Trump is telling the voters is completely different from what is happening behind closed doors.

When Republicans nominated Trump, they thought that they were getting a billionaire who could help the party raise money while throwing his own cash into the pot for his White House bid.

What the GOP is stuck with is a deadbeat who talks a good game that they are going to have to fund in the general election because he is either unwilling or unable to pull his own weight.

When you have two candidates possessing the highest unfavourable ratings of any major candidates nominated by their respective parties, you can expect that this will be a race to see who hits the bottom last, said Kevin Madden, spokesman for Mitt Romney in the 2012 campaign. Both candidates will believe it is in their interest to make sure that their opponent maintains a poisoned profile in the eyes of voters.

Mr Trump has accused Mrs Clinton of being an enabler for her husbands extramarital dalliances, in a bid to blunt her criticism of his record with women. She recently said that she would not fall into the trap of responding, but his attacks have posed a conundrum. Her attempts to criticise him over policy have been drowned out by his controversial statements which help him dominate television media.

During his first big campaign swing since locking up the Republican presidential nomination, Trump went after an odd and seemingly random group of people Democrats and Republicans, famous and obscure. There seemed little to gain politically from the attacks, and his targets were linked by just one thing: Trump felt they had all done him wrong.

So he blasted Republicans who have yet to endorse him, including Jeb Bush, New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez and Mitt Romney, who Trump said walks like a penguin. He declared that Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton doesnt look presidential, and he went after her allies, especially Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), whom Trump continues to call Pocahontas even after being told the nickname is offensive. He mocked those protesting him and slammed reporters covering his candidacy.

During the four-day, four-state tour, Trump also went after people who were probably unknown to his supporters until he brought them up: Barbara Res, a former employee quoted in an article about his treatment of women, and U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel, who is assigned to hear a fraud case against now-defunct Trump University.

Trumps cutting insults and simplistic attacks have been a hallmark of his candidacy, viewed by supporters as proof that he is fearless and willing to attack institutions from the Republican Party to the Vatican. During Trumps fight for the Republican nomination, his calculated shots at rivals helped take them out, one by one.

But with the nomination apparently secured, last weeks fusillade of digs seemed counterproductive. Why go after the GOPs only two female minority governors Martinez and South Carolinas Nikki Haley when there are many other elected Republicans who have not endorsed him? What does he gain from smearing a former employee and a federal judge whom most of his supporters have never heard of? Why comment on Clintons voice and appearance instead of her record?

Latino leaders in California working to mend the GOPs relationship with their community were filled with dread, not joy, as Donald Trump clinched their partys nomination for the presidency.

The businessmans campaign, staked on a hard-line approach and incendiary rhetoric about illegal immigration, threatened to unravel the progress theyve made to repair a schism created by a 1994 ballot measure that sought to deny taxpayer-funded services to those in the country illegally.

The state GOP lost a generation of Latino voters in the aftermath of that ballot measure, Proposition 187. And now Latino Republicans fear they will lose yet another generation as a result of Trump becoming the standard-bearer of their party.

I am concerned, and Im saddened, and Im bewildered, said Luis Alvarado, a GOP media strategist who, like many other Latino officials in California, said he will not vote for Trump. We had fought for every inch in changing the minds and hearts of not just fellow Latinos, but also fellow Republicans in understanding how we need to work together. And Trump comes along and everything just gets pushed aside.

The Republican Partys problem with Latino voters predate Trump because of the partys stance on immigration. GOP strategists often say that Latinos may agree with the party on social and economic issues but wont listen to their pitch if they believe Republicans want to deport their family members.

In California, there are 4.1 million registered Latino voters, with 55% registered as Democrats, 16% Republican and 25% having no party preference.

Trump insists that Latinos love him, but polling does not bear that out. A Fox News poll in May found Latino voters favored Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton over Trump 62% to 23%.

Many have had a visceral reaction to Trump’s proposals that include deporting 11 million people and building an enormous border wall. Protests greet Trump whenever he holds rallies in California.
