Leisure is a key aspect of modern living. How did our ancestors experience recreation
in the past, and how does this relate to the present? To answer these questions,
Peter Borsay examines the history of leisure in Britain over the past 500 years, analysing
elements of both continuity and change. A History of Leisure – explores a range of pastimes,
from festive culture and music to tourism and sport – emphasises a conceptual and critical
approach, rather than a simple narrative history – covers a range of themes including
economy, state, class, identities, place, space and time – treats the constituent parts of the
British Isles as a fluid and dynamic amalgam of local and national cultures and polities.
Authoritative and engaging, this text challenges conventional views on the history of
leisure and suggests new approaches to the subject. Borsay draws upon the insights
provided by a variety of disciplines alongside that of history – anthropology, the arts,
geography and sociology – to offer an essential guide to this fascinating area of study.

From rodeos to quilting bees, stickball to stock car racing, American pastimes comprise
a broad range of activities. The two-volume “Encyclopedia of Recreation and Leisure in
America provides a comprehensive survey of these activities from the Colonial era to the
present. This new title examines how the pursuit of leisure has changed over time, reflecting
shifting social, cultural, political and economic trends in the United States. Particular attention
is paid to how leisure activities have varied by region, class, ethnicity, gender and age.
Such information fuels history class discussions and assignments as the curriculum increasingly
requires students to understand not only the milestones of political and military history, but also
how people lived day to day. From entries on specific types of leisure activities to discussions of
important themes in the history of leisure, the “Encyclopedia provides a unique window into this
key component of American social history.

The obvious audience for this book is professionals, scholars, and students in the
recreation field. However, many of these entries relate to other fields of interest. . . .
This work should find a place in academic libraries supporting curricula in recreation
and related leisure studies. Reference Books Bulletin The vocabulary and major concepts
of the new field of recreation and leisure studies are just developing and this dictionary
is the first major attempt to describe and systematize those concepts. Although university
departments devoted to the study of recreation and leisure have been in existence for over
half a century, there has never been a comprehensive dictionary written for the field.
The concepts included in the dictionary may be grouped into four general categories.
Each definition is organized chronologically, emphasizing the evolution of the term and
its interpretation or application. Definitions also point to links between concepts listed in
the dictionary. Numerous references and suggestions for further reading are included for
readers wishing to pursue a topic in more detail. Faculty and graduate students in recreation
and leisure studies will welcome this first comprehensive dictionary of the field, as will the
libraries of universities and colleges with a recreation and leisure studies department.
The historical material and the critical review of conflicting definitions is a special feature
and one that makes this book not only useful as a dictionary, but also as a reference work
on state of the art ideas and concepts in the field.

Skiing is one of the oldest modes of transportation known, predating the wheel with
dated artifacts to prove its pedigree. Skiing for sport, however, did not become common
until about 150 years ago. The first Winter Olympic Games, held in Chamonix, France
in 1924, were the first to introduce skiing as a competition. Events were held in both
ski jumping and cross-country skiing. With advances in technology and increased
leisure time, the popularity of skiing as a sport has risen exponentially since it was first
introduced. The Historical Dictionary of Skiing relates the history of the sport through
a comprehensive alphabetical dictionary with detailed, cross-referenced entries on key
figures, places, competitions, and governing bodies within the sport.
Author E. John B. Allen introduces the reader to the history of skiing through a detailed
chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes and an extensive bibliography. This book
is an excellent access point for researchers, students, and anyone interested in the history
of skiing.

While the earliest evidence of organized running can be traced back to Egypt in 3800 BCE,
the modern sport of track and field evolved from rural games and church and folk festivals,
and rules were drawn up in the final quarter of the 19th century in those advanced societies
where enough people had the leisure time to indulge their fancies. Today, in addition to the
running events, track and field includes such events as the high jump, pole vault, long jump,
shot, discus, javelin, hammer, and decathlon. The Historical Dictionary of Track and Field
covers the history of this sport through a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes,
and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 500 cross-referenced entries
on key figures, places, competitions, and governing bodies within the sport. This book is an
excellent access point for researchers, students, and anyone wanting to know more about the
history of track and field.

Praise for the previous edition: ‘To write a good textbook is only possible with pedagogic sensitivity,
significant educational experiences, and research practice. This book is evidence that the editors
possess all three qualifications. A student-friendly publication introducing plenty of examples and
case studies (and) encouraging students to acquire the skills needed… this book (is) a winner.’
Annals of Tourism Research 39(3), 2012. Describing the fundamental elements of research methods
for leisure, recreation and tourism, this new edition of a popular textbook is updated throughout.
It covers the measurement of variables, sampling, questionnaire design and evaluation methods,
and also a wider discussion of writing proposals, communicating research findings, cross-cultural
research, and the use of new technologies in conducting research. This new edition includes: –
new and expanded material on visual research methods, nonparametric tests and sampling to
encompass growing areas of research interest; – pedagogical features and extra citations to create a
cohesive learning experience for students; and – numerous examples from tourism and recreation
literature in every chapter, tying theory into scenarios students could face in their careers.
Written by internationally renowned researchers in an accessible style, this book introduces both
undergraduate and graduate students to the vital skills they will need to succeed in the leisure,
recreation, tourism and hospitality industries.

This landmark publication brings together some of the most perceptive commentators
of the present moment to explore core ideas and cutting edge developments in the field
of Leisure Studies. It offers important new insights into the dynamics of the transformation
of leisure in contemporary societies, tracing the emergent issues at stake in the discipline
and examining Leisure Studies’ fundamental connections with cognate disciplines such as
Sociology, Cultural Studies, History, Sport Studies and Tourism.
This book contains original work from key scholars across the globe, including those working
outside the Leisure Studies mainstream. It showcases the state of the art of contemporary
Leisure Studies, covering key topics and key thinkers from the psychology of leisure to
leisure policy, from Bourdieu to Baudrillard, and suggests that leisure in the 21stcentury
should be understood as centring on a new ‘Big Seven’ (holidays, drink, drugs, sex,
gambling, TV and shopping). No other book has gone as far in redefining the identity of
the discipline of Leisure Studies, or in suggesting how the substantive ideas of Leisure
Studies need to be rethought. The Routledge Handbook of Leisure Studiesshould therefore
be the intellectual guide of first choice for all scholars, academics, researchers and students
working in this subject area.

Handbook on the Economics of Leisure by Samuel Cameron (Editor)
ISBN: 0857930567
Publication Date: 2011-11-30
This interdisciplinary Handbook combines both mainstream and heterodox economics to
assess the nature, scope and importance of leisure activities. Surprisingly, the field of leisure
economics is not, thus far, a particularly integrated or coherent one. In this Handbook a
wide ranging body of international scholars get to grips with the core issues, taking in the
traditional income/leisure choice model of textbook microeconomics and Becker’s allocation
of time model along the way. They expertly apply economics to some usually neglected topics,
such as boredom and sleeping, work-life balance, dating, tourism, health and fitness, sport,
video games, social networking, music festivals and sex. Contributions from further afield by
Veblen, Sctivosky and Bourdieu also feature prominently. Applying a mix of both theoretical
and empirical data, undergraduate students in modules on sport/leisure economics as well as
sport/leisure management will find this important resource invaluable.

The Oxford Handbook of Music Making and Leisure
by Roger Mantie (Editor); Gareth Dylan Smith (Editor)
ISBN: 9780190244705
Publication Date: 2017-01-02
From a broad range of perspectives and approaches, this handbook explores avocational involvement
with music as an integral part of the human condition. The chapters in The Oxford Handbook of Music
Making and Leisure present myriad ways for reconsidering and refocusing attention back on the rich,
exciting, and emotionally charged waysin which people of all ages make time for making music.
The contexts discussed are broadly Western, including an eclectic variety of voices from scholars
across fields and disciplines, framing complex and multifaceted phenomena that may be helpfully,
enlighteningly, and perhaps provocatively framedas music making and leisure. This volume may be
viewed as an attempt to reclaim music making and leisure as a serious concern for, amongst others,
policy makers, scholars, and educators who perhaps risk eliding some or even most of the ways in
which music – a vital part of human existence – isintegrated into the everyday lives of people.
As such, this handbook looks beyond the obvious, asking readers to consider anew, “What might we
see when we think of music making as leisure?”

Field Guide to Case Study Research in Tourism, Hospitality and Leisure
by Kenneth F. Hyde (Editor); Chris Ryan (Editor); Arch G. Woodside (Editor, Series edited by)
ISBN: 1780527438
Publication Date: 2012-06-26
This field guide provides methods and studies on how-to-do case study research in natural settings.
A truly international guide, this text is ideal for those studying and conducting case study research
in tourism, hospitality and leisure disciplines. It provides a comprehensive and practical account of
how to describe, explain and predict both individual and group case behavior, at the same time
explaining behavior among a set of cases relevant to a specific context. This guide embraces and
extends Herbert Simon’s (Nobel Prize in Economics recipient) insight that a decision results from the
conjoining two antecedents in human behavior: cognitive processing of an individual or group and a
given context or problem framing. Divided into six parts, this guide includes chapters on: analysis of
texts; how-to-do executive interviews; field interviewing in international contexts; stakeholder
participatory research; researching indigenous and marginal peoples; and cross-case analysis.
The chapters increase skills and understanding of culture, tourism, and hospitality behavior through
analysis of the four principle objectives of case study research: accomplishing accuracy; achieving
generality; reporting complexity and broad coverage; and achieving impact for improving the
individual condition, client, and/or society.

Historic Hiking Trails by Steve Rajtar
ISBN: 1476602344
Publication Date: 2002-07-01
Approximately 900 hiking trails in the United States take hikers along routes or past sites of historical
importance and offer commemorative embroidered patches or other souvenirs of the outing.
These trails allow hikers to gain a new appreciation for history and actually experience it, instead of
only reading about it–and have something to show for their hike. The first comprehensive guide to
those trails, this work covers routes in all fifty states and the District of Columbia as well as interstate
trails. The book categorizes each as historic, meaning that it played some significant role in history;
historical, meaning that it takes the hiker by or into buildings or sites that have some relationship to a

ISBN: 3662477068
Publication Date: 2015-09-24
This book, published in cooperation with ESSKA, is a comprehensive, evidence-based manual on the
prevention of injuries and overuse in sports that will assist physicians, physiotherapists, and trainers
in providing excellent mental and physical guidance to athletes. The causes of overuse and sports
injuries are carefully analyzed, explaining the medical basis for prevention. In addition, detailed
attention is paid to the relationship between sport motivation, risk willingness, tendency to overload,
and tendency to increased risk of injury. The reader is effectively trained in mental and physical
analysis of the athlete and will gain an appreciation of the influence of the athlete’s environment on
susceptibility to injury. Gender-specific differences and the specific risks faced by children and
adolescents are identified, and very popular sports such as soccer, alpine skiing, and throwing sports
are discussed in individual chapters. Training schedules of value in the context of particular
physiotherapeutic and medical interventions are described with the help of illustrations and charts.
The authors are team physicians, coaches, sports scientists, training scientists, and physiotherapists
involved in high-performance sports and recreational sports.

Overcoming the Inadequacies of Performance Measurement in Local Government:
The Case of Libraries and Leisure Services by David N. Ammons
Public Administration Review
Vol. 55, No. 1 (Jan. – Feb., 1995), pp. 37-47 (11 pages)
Published by: Wiley on behalf of the American Society for Public Administration
What strategy could boost performance measurement in local government beyond the current level that finds
most cities predominantly reporting raw workload figures, if they report any performance indicators whatsoever?
The author argues that increased emphasis of relevant performance comparisons-with other local governments and
with appropriate standards-could capture media and citizen attention and thereby prompt greater accountability.
Evidence is presented showing that relevant standards and actual performance figures suitable for comparative
purposes, though hardly plentiful, do exist in selected municipal functions.

Conflict Resolution in the United States and China by Yun Ma
ISBN: 9781317161882
Publication Date: 2016
This book provides a comprehensive and up to date comparative study of the management and
resolution of conflicts between conservation and recreation in protected areas in the US and China.
Competing claims on the use of nature, Increasing regulation of land use and recreational activities,
and the conflicting goals between conservation and development have led to a rise in conflicts in the
designation and management of protected areas. How to effectively manage and resolve these conflicts
has become a challenge for both legislators and managers. By adopting an institutional dimension in
legal interpretation, this book critically examines how such conflicts are dealt with in the legal regimes
of the US and China while exploring interactions between legislatures, agencies and courts. The book
searches for a plausible solution to improve the legal framework of protected areas in China by
emulating pertinent mechanisms developed in the US, whilst also presenting legal and policy
recommendations to the US. This informative book will be useful for legal scholars in Chinese law,
nature conservation law, administrative law and comparative law.

The gap between theory and practice in the leisure, sport and tourism studies areas seems to have widened
as scholars have become more specialized. Nevertheless, it is imperative that students be as familiar as
possible with a wide range of social and political theory, and also be able to reconcile that knowledge with
their own current and future roles as practicing professionals. A comprehensive, multidisciplinary
approach to public policymaking and planning in the leisure, sport and tourism sectors, this book: –
examines the theoretical issues underpinning public sector policymaking such as political ideologies,
leisure wants, needs, demand and benefits, and human rights in leisure, sport, tourism and culture; –
discusses the debates surrounding the role of the state versus market, and models of organizational
decision-making; and – uses applied sections addressing strategic planning and performance evaluation
to provide a link between theory and practical analytical techniques.

The Retreats of Reconstruction by David E. Goldberg
ISBN: 0823272710
Publication Date: 2016-11-01
Beginning in the 1880s, the economic realities and class dynamics of popular northern resort towns
unsettled prevailing assumptions about political economy and threatened segregationist practices.
Exploiting early class divisions, black working-class activists staged a series of successful protests
that helped make northern leisure spaces a critical battleground in a larger debate about racial
equality. While some scholars emphasize the triumph of black consumer activism with defeating
segregation, Goldberg argues that the various consumer ideologies that first surfaced in northern
leisure spaces during the Reconstruction era contained desegregation efforts and prolonged
Jim Crow. Combining intellectual, social, and cultural history, The Retreats of Reconstruction
examines how these decisions helped popularize the doctrine of “separate but equal” and explains
why the politics of consumption is critical to understanding the “long civil rights movement.”

Rebecca Edwards invites us to look more closely at the periodwhen the United States became a modern industrial

contradictions of the era, including stories of tragedy and injustice alongside tales of humor, endurance, and triumph.

Local Government Officials’ Perceptions of Parks and Recreation
From National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA)
Parks and recreation is predominantly a service provided by local governments and therefore is
reliant on financial support from local governments’ general tax funds. However, local governments
fund and manage a variety of different public services, including, but not limited to, police protection,
fire protection, transportation, education, public welfare and parks and recreation.
Typically, these public services must vie for funding from the same limited pool of tax revenues.
In the face of this competitive environment, many park and recreation agencies throughout the
United States suffer from stagnant or declining budget allocations, despite the solid support for their
offerings and services from Americans.
Due to the crucial role elected and appointed officials play in determining public expenditures, it is
important for the park and recreation profession to understand how local government officials view
and prioritize these services.

The Development of Organized Recreation in the Uhited States From The Social Security Administration
June 2009 Parks and Recreation in the United States Local Park Systems. by Margaret Walls
Introduction
The United States has 53 national parks and over 6,600 state park sites, but many outdoor pursuits
often begin at the playground around the corner, the nature center down the road, or the sports fields at
a nearby recreation area. These close-to-home parks and open spaces are a critical component of the
U.S. recreation estate. Characterizing and describing these resources is difficult, however, given the wide
variety of parks provided in individual communities and the lack of a central organization or government
agency responsible for collecting and managing data on local parks. In this backgrounder, we show some
of the available information. We analyze park acreage and facilities for a set of cities, show trends in local
government spending on parks and recreation services, and describe results from a survey we conducted
of local park directors identifying current challenges they face and popularity trends in their parks.

of a livable community? In what type of community, they would like to live? How important are building
social connections amongst family, friends, neighbors, colleagues, and others? How are such relationships
developed and sustained? What types of organizations are more likely to create such opportunities for
building one’s social capital? What agencies in the community are concerned with addressing?
environmental degradation and on the flipside enhancing community beautification and greening?
All of these questions point toward the importance of public parks and recreation and its community

Quality-Of-Life Community Indicators for Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management

Publication Date: 2011-01-01
While community quality-of-life indicators are gaining much needed attention in both scholarly
work and practice, their application in the areas of parks, recreation and tourism management
are not as well known. The applicability of indicator systems for natural resource and natural
resource area management within the parks and recreation arena is very high, including urban
parks and recreation programs and their influence on quality of life. Tourism is also an area
that needs much more work in terms of assessing impacts as well as developing indicators for
gauging progress in the long term. All three areas are an integrated discipline and most programs
throughout the developed world are housed co-jointly. There are several researchers across the
globe who are conducting innovative work in these areas. The editors feel that a volume on the
topic will spur additional interests as well as serve to lead the research efforts.

Similar to how Google Scholar works, Dataset Search lets you find datasets wherever they’re hosted,
whether it’s a publisher’s site, a digital library, or an author’s personal web page. To create Dataset
search, we developed guidelines for dataset providers to describe their data in a way that Google
(and other search engines) can better understand the content of their pages. These guidelines include
salient information about datasets: who created the dataset, when it was published, how the data was
collected, what the terms are for using the data, etc. We then collect and link this information, analyze
where different versions of the same dataset might be, and find publications that may be describing or
discussing the dataset.

The Statistical Abstract of the United States was a publication of the United States Census Bureau, an agency of the United States Department of Commerce. Published annually since 1878, the statistics described social and economic conditions in the United States.
The U.S. Census Bureau stopped publishing the Statistical Abstract of the United States with the 2012 edition. It stopped compiling the data on which it is based, along with the supplemental products, as of October 1, 2011. The Census Bureau said:
“
The U.S. Census Bureau is terminating the collection of data for the Statistical Compendia program effective
October 1, 2011. The Statistical Compendium program comprises the Statistical Abstract of the United States
and its supplemental products — the State and Metropolitan Area Data Book and the County and City Data Book.
In preparation for the Fiscal Year 2012 (FY 2012) budget, the Census Bureau did a comprehensive review of a
number of programs and had to make difficult proposals to terminate and reduce a number of existing programs
in order to acquire funds for higher priority programs. The decision to propose the elimination of this program was
not made lightly. To access the most current data, please refer to the organizations cited in the source notes for
each table of the Statistical Abstract.[1]
”
Washington Post columnist Robert J. Samuelson wrote, “This is a mighty big loss for a mighty small saving.” The agency’s 2012 budget would eliminate the Statistical Compendia Branch, which compiles the Statistical Abstract and other publications (such as the “County and City Data Book”). This would save $2.9 million and cut 24 jobs. Both the book and online versions of the Statistical Abstract would vanish. The American Library Association, representing about 16,700 public libraries and more than 100,000 academic and school libraries, is arguing to keep the Statistical Abstract. Alesia McManus, library director at Howard Community College in Columbia, started a Facebook page and launched a petition dedicated to reversing the decision, wrote Samuelson. He quoted one librarian as writing, “If the library were on fire, this would be the reference book I would try and save first,” and another saying, The “Statistical Abstract has for years been one of the top five reference books used by students and faculty at South Dakota State University.” Samuelson said he didn’t think the librarians’ protest would have much effect.[2]
Joseph Dionne[3] and Paul Krugman[4] published columns agreeing with Samuelson.
ProQuest continued the series, in co-operation with Bernan Press.[5] The list price of the 2012 Department of Commerce edition was $20 (paperback), free online.[6] Agency Publisher: Department of Commerce (DOC). U.S. Census Bureau. The list price of the Proquest edition is $199. [7]
In 1975 a two volume Historical Statistics of the United States, Colonial Times to 1970 Bicentennial Edition was published.

Selected Books about Recreation and Statistics
Stats to Go by John Buglear
ISBN: 0750645563
Publication Date: 2000-06-05
‘Stats to Go’ is a user-friendly guide for hospitality, leisure and tourism students who need
to learn statistics and statistical techniques. ‘Stats to go’ is an ideal companion to hospitality,
leisure and tourism studies as the breadth of coverage supports all taught numerical aspects
of these types of course. Examples from hospitality, leisure and tourism organizations:
* licensed premises * fast food outlets * hotels * theme parks and their environments are
used to illustrate key issues of the text. The area of quantitative methods is one which many
students find unapproachable or daunting. With the use of a clear learning structure, and a
user friendly, non-theoretical approach, Buglear has created a text which students and
lecturers alike will find indispensable.

Applied Research and Evaluation Methods in Recreation by Diane C. Blankenship
ISBN: 9780736077194
Publication Date: 2009-12-02
By properly evaluating programs, recreation professionals can better understand the impact of their
programs and, with data in hand, justify future investments. Applied Research and Evaluation
Methods in Recreation helps students build the competencies they need in order to meet professional
standards. Applied Research and Evaluation Methods in Recreation is the only text that integrates
research, evaluation, and basic statistical analysis and links these concepts directly to the recreation
field. Using a logical format and accessible language, the book provides students with the foundational
knowledge they need in order to move through the research process. They’ll explore the various types
of research commonly used in the field (including qualitative, quantitative, and action research) and
then learn about the steps involved in designing a project, from developing the research problem,
reviewing literature, and identifying variables and hypotheses to defining the population to study,
developing the instrumentation plan, and choosing the appropriate data-collection tools. Then they’ll
move on to evaluation concepts, including internal validity, data analysis, and reporting methods.
Students will learn not only why the steps and concepts are important but also how they relate
specifically to the field. Each chapter closes with features that help students apply what they’ve learned:

ISBN: 0815347480
Publication Date: 2018-06-01
Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Leisure Sciences Journal, this book focuses on where it and leisure
sciences (as a field) started and what the future might hold for both. The foremost scholars in our field

should be thinking about, and where we are now in relation to where previous projections expected.

studies; leisure and social isolation; radical leisure; and post-qualitative radical ontology. The chapters were
originally published as a special issue of Leisure Sciences.

Problem Solving in Recreation and Parks by Joseph J. Bannon
ISBN: 0137117701:
Publication Date: 1981-01-01
Certainly, a book of this type should not be limited to classroom use. It is hoped that its concepts and ideas
can also be effectively used in staff development programs and in-service training, as well as by park and
recreation boards, military installations, hospitals, conservation agencies, penal institutions, commercial
recreation enterprises, colleges and university administrations, state departments, and other agencies
concerned with recreation and park problems. What is important is that the problems a person is likely to
encounter, and these are for the most part predictable, are those for which students and practitioners have
been prepared. I attempt to combine practical with academic approaches to problem solving, offering both
the theoretical and pragmatic viewpoints, combining these wherever possible. For these reasons, this book
should be useful not only for teaching park and recreation students how to handle hypothetical problems
systematically, but as an update and refresher for those involved with actual problems in agencies and
organisations.

Black Recreation by Jearold Winston Holland
ISBN: 0830415769
Publication Date: 2002-01-01
While the black experience in America has been told in many ways, it has seldom, if ever, been substantially
addressed from the play, recreation, and leisure perspective. That is the primary intent of Black Recreation:
A Historical Perspective. Leisure and recreation activities are an important measure of quality of life of
happiness, wealth, and health. Historical interpretation, accurately presented, can help give individuals a
better sense of identity of who they are and how far they have come. Both minority and majority readers
will benefit from broad-based analysis of the recreational activities and effects they had on American
culture as a whole.
A History of Leisure by Peter Borsay
ISBN: 0333930819
Publication Date: 2006-02-28
Leisure is a key aspect of modern living. How did our ancestors experience recreation in the past,
and how does this relate to the present? To answer these questions, Peter Borsay examines the
history of leisure in Britain over the past 500 years, analysing elements of both continuity and
change. A History of Leisure – explores a range of pastimes, from festive culture and music to
tourism and sport – emphasises a conceptual and critical approach, rather than a simple narrative
history – covers a range of themes including economy, state, class, identities, place, space and time –
treats the constituent parts of the British Isles as a fluid and dynamic amalgam of local and national
cultures and polities. Authoritative and engaging, this text challenges conventional views on the
history of leisure and suggests new approaches to the subject. Borsay draws upon the insights provided
by a variety of disciplines alongside that of history – anthropology, the arts, geography and sociology –
to offer an essential guide to this fascinating area of study.
Spare Time in Texas by David G. McComb
ISBN: 0292793898
What do Texans’ pastimes and recreations say about their characters? Looking at Texas history
from a new angle, David McComb starts from the premise that how people spend their leisure
time may well reveal more about their true natures and interests than the work they do or their
family connections. In this innovative book, McComb traces the history of various types of
recreation in Texas, gathering significant insights into the characters of Texans from the pleasures
they have pursued. Reflecting the frontier origins of Texas, McComb starts with the recreations
that were most popular with men in a crude, still-developing society–drinking, gambling, and
whoring. He goes on to show how, as Texas became more civilized, so did its diversions.
He describes how Texans have connected with nature in parks and zoos; watched football and
baseball in great stadiums such as the Astrodome and Cotton Bowl; discovered the pleasure of
reading in public and university libraries; and enjoyed radio, TV, movies, and live theater in places
such as Houston’s Alley Theatre. This recreational history reveals that Texans are open-minded
and generous; that they respect the land; oppose prostitution but indulge in gambling and
drinking; support racial and gender rights; love zoos; champion libraries; take pride in theatrical
productions; and adore sports.
