Olympic Committee gives USA Gymnastics board less than a week to resign

The U.S. Olympic Committee is demanding all USA Gymnastics board members resign over the Larry Nassar sexual abuse scandal. More than 150 women and girls, including numerous athletes and Olympic gymnasts, have accused the former U.S. gymnastics team doctor of abuse. A judge sentenced Nassar to up to 175 years in prison this week.

The Olympic Committee says if board members don’t resign by Wednesday, USAG will lose its status as a national governing body, reports CBS News’ Jon LaPook. Four of the 21 board members have already stepped down. USAG said it “embraces the requirements.”

How to Avoid, Recognize and Treat Concussion in Sports

The Conversation

Recognize, remove, rest and recover before returning to sport. Those are key points about sport-related concussion stated in the 5th International Consensus Statement on Concussion in Sport.

.

The Canadian Guidelines on Concussion in Sport have been developed based on this statement and were recently released by Parachute Canada, a charitable organization focused on injury prevention, and its expert advisory group.

.

The good news is that most people who suffer a concussion will recover in the initial days and weeks following injury. However, some will have ongoing symptoms. While concussions may occur in sport, there are many benefits to physical activity and sport participation for both youth and adults.

.

I am a physiotherapist and researcher (assistant professor and clinician scientist) at the Sport Injury Prevention Research Centre, Faculty of Kinesiology, University of Calgary. My research focuses on the prevention and treatment of sport-related concussion in children, youth and adults, with special emphasis on the role of the neck and balance systems.

.

A concussion is a type of a brain injury that occurs following a trauma to the head or body. Symptoms can come on immediately or may take hours to gradually evolve. The most common symptom following concussion is a headache. However, a number of other symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, fatigue, difficulty with concentration, neck pain and other complaints may also occur. Lying motionless, clutching the head, being slow to get up, wobbling and appearing dazed are some of the observable signs.

Baseball Teams Need to Protect Fans from Foul Balls –

The Conversation

Tens of thousands of fans are gathering at Major League Baseball ballparks around the country for hot dogs, home runs, their favorite players autographs and the fresh grass on the field.

.

Few fans will consider the possibility that they could be blinded or suffer a serious head injury by a ball or bat leaving the field of play. In reality, such injuries occur much more frequently than many may realize, with a 2014 analysis finding that more than 1,750 fans are hurt each year by batted balls at MLB games.

.

Who should be held responsible legally when injuries like this occur?

.

In a new paper, University of Georgia business student Zachary Flagel and I argue that its time for courts to abolish an outdated rule that has historically immunized baseball teams from liability.
The Baseball Rule

.

Under a century-old legal doctrine commonly known as the Baseball Rule, U.S. courts have almost uniformly held that professional baseball teams are not liable for these kinds of injuries to fans, who are stuck with the medical and rehab costs.

.

Specifically, as long as a team takes basic precautions such as putting nets immediately behind home plate and ensuring that there are enough screened seats to meet anticipated demand, then under the Baseball Rule it will not be held legally responsible for fans injuries.

Young Athletes: Injuries And Prevention

Published Thursday 9 August 2012

https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/248796.php

.

High profile events like the Olympics bring the hope that witnessing and celebrating dedicated athletes at the top of their game, will inspire young people to take up sport and physical activities that help them develop confidence, lead more satisfying lives, and not least, secure long-term health by reducing their risk for developing chronic illness like diabetes, obesity, cancer and cardiovascular diseases.

.

But unfortunately, if they don’t take appropriate measures, young athletes can instead, end up in pain, on a different path to poor health, due to avoidable sport injury.

.

James R. Andrews, a former president of the American Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), said in May this year, the US has experienced a tremendous rise in the number of young people taking up sport. Estimates show 3.5 million children aged 14 and under receive medical treatment for sport-related injuries, while high-school athletes account for another 2 million a year.

.

“This makes sports the leading cause of adolescent injury. Along with time away from school and work, these injuries can have far-reaching effects,” said Andrews.
